Bishop Joseph W. Tolton

Bishop Joseph William Tolton is the President of Interconnected Justice, a Black Internationalist network that connects and mobilizes Africans with people of African descent across the diaspora. The organization aligns political, economic, spiritual, and social resources to imagine and to activate Black self-determination.

As the convener of The ICJustice Affirming Elders Council—the flagship program of the organization—Bishop Tolton has built a transnational, faith‑led alliance of more than 30 influential African and African American clergy, academics, civil society advocates, legal experts, and political strategists who collaborate closely with The ICJustice Youth Core. These Gen Z and millenial leaders carry the Council’s message into the public square by convening quarterly virtual global town hall meetings attended by more than 300 youth and by producing ICJustice News, a digital series that highlights pan‑African issues through a justice‑centered lens.

Ultimately, Bishop is positioning Interconnected Justice to be a premier policy forum that reveals and counters the global assault of white Christian nationalist upon African bodies, democratic institutions, indigenous spiritualities, and resources.

As a global faith leader, Bishop has:

  • served as an Advisor to the U.S. State Department’s Office of Religious Engagement
  • founded the first network of LGBTQ-affirming congregations across East Africa

 In his secular career, Tolton:

  • founded and managed Blur Nation, a full-service marketing firm whose clients included Turks & Caicos Tourism, National Grid Energy, Carver Federal Savings Bank, and Hewlett‑Packard
  • was the first Director of Multicultural Marketing for Mercedes‑Benz USA.

Bishop Tolton earned a BA in Religion from Vassar College and an MBA from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business.
